How We Tested?
Do you think you’re picky on toilet paper? We use specially trained machines and sensory engineers to determine which toilet paper combines convenience, softness, and strength.
We stack and insert 8 sheets of each toilet paper into an Instron, a device that is normally used for more stable materials such as plastic and fabric. It pushes a steel ball slowly through the sheets. The force required to perforate the paper is measured and recorded using computer software. Thicker papers can withstand three times more pressure than weaker ones before tearing. Also, the Instron determines how far you have to pull to tear two sheets along their perforations, which is called tear relief.
We checked the softness of the toilet paper in a room at controlled humidity and temperature so that the fibers of the toilet paper are evaluated under controlled conditions. We first make gentle, circular movements with our fingertip on each sample. Then gently pull our fingers in a straight line over the fabric. The two tests help us create an overall impression of softness. Then we test the flexibility by carefully handling the paper into a ball. The roughest and stiffest papers appear sharp, wavy and cracked. The softer ones tend to be flexible and smoothly conform to the hand.
Down the Drain
To find out what happens after flushing the toilet paper, we check its ease of disintegration. This gives you an idea of how it moves through the wastewater and sanitary treatment facilities of a house. We put a square section of 2 x 2 inches, cut from a sheet of toilet paper, and a 2-inch stirring bar, in a beaker filled with water which rests on a stirring bar. The disintegration time of the sheet gives the score.
Types of Toilet Paper
There are three (3) main types of toilet paper:
Virgin: Virgin toilet paper is made from trees and doesn’t use recycled paper. The term comes from the virgin fibers of freshly cut trees. The trees are cut, shredded, bleached, and then transformed into toilet paper rolls. Many people choose virgin toilet paper because it is often softer, cheaper, and more readily available.
Bamboo: Bamboo toilet paper is made using a process similar to virgin toilet paper, but uses bamboo stems instead of trees. Bamboo is a grass that grows back after being cut and so does not need to be replanted. This is considered a more eco-friendly option than virgin toilet paper.
Recycled: Recycled toilet paper is better for the environment because the manufacturing process has a smaller ecological footprint. Recycled toilet paper is made from used newspaper or office paper, not used toilet paper. The old paper is collected and mixed with hot water to form a pulp. Processes are applied to the pulp to remove ink, bleach the paper, dry it, and transform it into toilet paper.
What to Consider When Buying Toilet Paper
Are you looking for toilet paper that offers maximum comfort and softness during your stay in the toilet bowl? Or are you looking for a tough paper made from durable materials? Whatever you needs may be, we have a solution that meets your requirements. After hours of research and evaluation, we searched the toilet paper market and identified the 10 most important products and brands that you can trust. To help you alleviate your concerns, we have also developed this comprehensive guide on how to identify and select the best toilet paper.
Here are some of the key points to keep in mind when looking for toilet paper to get the job done without causing a headache.
Everything from the number of rolls in the package to the size of the sheets and the number of layers can affect how you perceive the value of toilet paper. If the price is your main concern, keep in mind that toilet paper can cost between 10 and 70 cents per 100 sheets. Note that two or three-layer products typically use fewer sheets, which narrows the price gap between different products.
Carefully check the number of rolls and sheets in a toilet paper packaging before making a decision. Choosing a cheap bulk toilet paper can usually save you a lot of money.
The size of the sheets is also important. Traditionally, the sheets were about 4.5 inches wide. However, some modern brands have made rolls 4 inches or less wide. Check the dimensions before buying to make sure you get the best deal. When comparing, you can always refer to the total area surface of the product.
The number of piles, also known as sheet layers, that are bonded together to make the toilet paper thicker greatly affects the level of strength and durability of the product. While toilet paper usually comprises 1 to 3 layers, we recommend a 2-layer product for those who have average needs.
1-ply toilet paper can be enough if you are looking for an inexpensive solution and the paper does not have to be very thick.
3-ply toilet paper, conversely, is stronger and thicker, but also more expensive. For this reason, most users use 2-ply toilet paper, which offers an excellent balance between price, comfort, and durability.
Durability and Moisture Resistance
When looking for a carefree experience, durability, and strength are the main features of toilet paper that need to be considered. The thicker the toilet paper, the more convenient it is to use and the less fluff remains. Residual fluff is not only annoying but can also cause health problems if you have sensitive skin or if the toilet paper contains unwanted substances.
If you have durable toilet paper that is not prone to tearing, you will likely have to use less, which will save you time and money.
While the strength of toilet paper is critical, its softness is also critical. Durable toilet paper that is rough may not be good and can damage your skin. Look for a soft, skin-friendly toilet paper if you are looking for a long-term solution.
While all the products featured in this guide offer an adequate level of softness, some are extremely luxurious to ensure maximum comfort during trips to the toilet.
The heavier the toilet paper, the more water it normally absorbs. If you want to make sure that water and other excrement do not get through the paper during use, choose thicker (heavier) toilet paper that can hold more water. High quality 2- or 3-ply paper should do the trick.
An average American uses 50 pounds or 23.6 rolls of toilet paper per year, for a total of $6 billion in the annual value of toilet paper across the country. Due to the enormous amounts of toilet paper used worldwide, many forests are depleted or endangered. For this reason, more and more consumers are choosing eco-friendly solutions, including with regard to toilet paper.
If you want to make sure the toilet paper you use is made from sustainable materials, your best bet is to look for brands that offer products certified by independent institutions like the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI). By purchasing such products, you can ensure that you are conscientiously removing them.
In addition to certifications that are a good indicator of product sustainability efforts, there are other things to consider if you want to make sure your toilet paper is green.
For one thing, respect chlorine-free products if you have a chance. Although chlorine-bleached toilet paper looks good, it cannot be considered an eco-friendly option due to the environmental impact of chlorine, particularly from water and air sources.
A common solution on the market today is elemental chlorine-free (ECF) toilet paper. Although basic chlorine-free toilet paper is not completely chlorine-free, it does not contain chlorine, which is responsible for the production of dioxins that are harmful to the environment and human health.
Also, note that so-called “natural” and “environmentally friendly” products are not necessarily sustainable. If so, they have enough certifications to back up these allegations.
